The corner of Water and State Streets. This intersection on Long Wharf was known as Custom House Square because of the Customs House built there by the U. S. Government in 1818. The photo shows the New Haven and Derby Railroad track crossing State Street into its West Water Street yard. The engine house, car shop, and several freight cars are visible at the middle left. Horse-drawn carriages and signs saying "Stoddard, Kimberley" and "Elm House" are visible at the middle right.
